Fresh produce lands every Thursday.

Thursday morning the truck backs in and everything gets filled from empty: halal beef and chicken, fresh fish, and the vegetables and herbs.

Three aisles, with more in them than shops five times the size. If it belongs in an Iraqi, Levantine or Persian kitchen, it is somewhere on these shelves, and if it is not, Jaafar will find it.

His father kept a shop like this one.

Jaafar came to Boise from Iraq and opened Alahmad Market on Overland Road in 2019, carrying on the trade his father worked back home. He is usually the one at the counter, and he is the reason the shelves hold things nowhere else in the valley stocks.
